What it prepares you for
General English courses build everyday English: speaking, listening, reading and writing for work, travel and life in Australia.
You start at your level, from beginner to advanced, and move up as you progress. On a Student visa, English courses (ELICOS) include at least 20 hours of face-to-face classes a week.
Many students take General English before an IELTS or Academic English course, or before a vocational course that needs a certain level of English.

Many students start lower and move up: a Certificate IV or Diploma can lead into a Bachelor degree, often with credit for what you have already studied.
