Options beyond your current visa

Maybe you came to Australia for the adventure, thinking it would only be temporary - and then somewhere along the way, you fell in love with the place.

That was us 11 years ago, so we know the feeling.

Depending on your circumstances, there may be options to stay a little longer, extend your time in Australia by a few more years, or even explore a pathway that could allow you to call Australia home.

We can help you understand your short-term extension options and, together with the migration lawyer we work with, look at longer-term visa and migration pathways that may be available to you.

Tell us where you are now and where you'd like to be - we'll help you understand what could come next.

🎒01 · Work & Holiday visa holders

You came for a season. Stay for longer

Many Work & Holiday travellers discover they want more time here. Depending on your work, your visa subclass and your goals, three main pathways are usually open to you.

Option 01 / 03

Second or Third WH Visa

If you've completed the required specified work in eligible regional areas, you may qualify for a second and even a third Work & Holiday visa - up to three years total.

  • Second Work & Holiday visa (12 months)
  • Third Work & Holiday visa (12 months)
  • Payslip and employment history review
  • Eligibility check for your nationality and subclass
Option 02 / 03

WH → Student Visa

One of the most common pathways. Studying in Australia can extend your stay legally, add recognised qualifications and open longer-term migration options.

  • Business & Project Management
  • Community Services & Early Childhood
  • Information Technology
  • Hospitality, Building & Construction, Trades
Real story

Many clients who didn't finish the specified work needed for a second WH visa switch to a Diploma of Business or Community Services and stay for another two to three years - legally and productively.

Option 03 / 03

WH → Work Visa

Some Work & Holiday travellers find an Australian employer who is willing to sponsor them - but they may still be missing something required for the visa, such as a recognised qualification, relevant study or stronger English skills.

In that situation, a Student visa can sometimes be a useful pathway to gain the qualification or skills needed before moving into an employer-sponsored visa.

Depending on your circumstances, options may include:

  • Employer Sponsored visas
  • Skills in Demand pathways
  • Regional Employer Sponsored pathways

We can help you look at the bigger picture - what you already have, what may still be missing, and whether further study could help bridge that gap before sponsorship becomes possible.

🎓02 · Student visa holders

Your course ending isn't the end

The end of one course rarely means the end of your Australian journey. Most students either continue studying, move into work-based visas or transition to skilled migration.

Option 01 / 04

Student Visa → Student Visa

Common when progressing from Certificate to Diploma, Diploma to Bachelor, or Bachelor to Master - or when changing fields to strengthen future career opportunities.

  • Certificate IV in Business → Diploma of Leadership & Management
  • Diploma of Community Services → Bachelor of Social Work
  • Bachelor of Business → MBA
  • Bachelor of Engineering → Master of Engineering
Why this matters

Choosing a follow-on course that logically progresses your existing studies keeps your visa story consistent - which matters more than most students realise.

Option 02 / 04

Student Visa → Graduate Visa

A post-study work visa gives you extra time in Australia to build work experience, improve employability and prepare for future visa steps. Not all courses qualify - we help you check before you commit.

  • Extra time to gain Australian work experience
  • Improved employability with local roles on your CV
  • Building migration points where relevant
  • Time to explore employer sponsorship options
Option 03 / 04

Student Visa → Employer Sponsored

Many graduates secure work with Australian employers and later transition to employer-sponsored visas. Success usually comes down to occupation demand, skills gained during study and how you present yourself locally.

  • Occupation demand in your field
  • Skills and qualifications built during study
  • Employer willingness to sponsor
  • Local work experience gained in Australia
Option 04 / 04

Student Visa → Skilled Visa

After studying in Australia, some graduates move toward skilled migration. The right course choice at the start can make a big difference to what's realistic later.

  • Skilled Independent Visa
  • Skilled Nominated Visa
  • Regional Skilled Visa
  • Employer Sponsored Visa

You may have more options

Australia's visa system is complex, and many people simply don't know what's available to them. Your next step depends on your circumstances rather than a one-size-fits-all label.

Pathways may include
  • Further study
  • Employer sponsorship
  • Graduate visas
  • Partner visas
  • Regional pathways
  • Skilled migration
  • Family visas
04 · When should you start planning

Earlier than most people think

Most visa holders wait until their current visa is close to expiring before exploring options. Starting 6-12 months earlier usually gives you significantly more paths - and less stress.

Starting early lets you
  • Assess eligibility properly
  • Compare study and visa options side by side
  • Prepare documents before deadlines
  • Meet visa requirements comfortably
  • Secure course enrolments or sponsorship time
  • Avoid rushed decisions and unnecessary stress
