What is the 462 visa?
The Work and Holiday Visa (Subclass 462) allows young people from eligible countries to travel, work and experience life in Australia for up to 12 months.
It is one of Australia's most popular visas for travellers who want to:
- Work while travelling
- Gain international experience
- Improve their English
- Explore Australia
- Potentially extend their stay through a second and third Work and Holiday visa
Unlike the Working Holiday Visa (Subclass 417), the Subclass 462 visa has additional education and English language requirements for most applicants.
Basic eligibility requirements
To apply for a first Work and Holiday Visa (Subclass 462), you generally must:
- Be between 18 and 30 years old (inclusive)
- Hold a passport from an eligible country
- Apply from outside Australia
- Have sufficient funds for your stay
- Meet health and character requirements
- Meet the education requirements (if applicable)
- Meet the English language requirements (if applicable)
The visa allows you to stay in Australia for up to 12 months, work while travelling, study for up to 4 months, and travel in and out of Australia freely during the visa validity period.

Annual country caps & availability
The Australian Government limits the number of first Work and Holiday (Subclass 462) visas available to certain countries each program year. As visa places are allocated throughout the year, availability can change regularly. Some countries may reach their annual cap, while others remain open for new applications.
In addition, citizens of some countries participate in a ballot (lottery) process before they can apply for the visa.
Because these allocations change frequently, check the official Department of Home Affairs website for the latest status before lodging an application.
Check current country cap statusIf your country has reached its annual cap, don't panic. Often additional places become available in the next program year, or there may be alternative visa options available depending on your circumstances.
Education requirements
Most 462 applicants must meet minimum educational requirements. Generally, you must have completed:
Post-secondary qualifications - at least:
- A diploma
- An associate degree
- A university degree
- Or completed at least two years of university-level study
The exact requirement depends on your country of citizenship. Some countries only require completion of senior secondary education, while others require tertiary studies. The Department assesses each country separately.

University degree taught in English
You completed a Bachelor Degree, Master's Degree, Diploma or Associate Degree where all tuition was delivered in English.
Two years of post-secondary study in English
You completed at least two years of full-time study where instruction was entirely in English.
Australian studies
You completed at least one year of full-time study at an Australian institution where instruction was in English.
Country-specific exemptions
Some nationalities may have alternative pathways based on their country's agreement with Australia.
What if I don't qualify for the 462?
Many people discover they do not qualify because:
- Their country is not eligible
- They are over the age limit
- The country cap has closed
- They do not meet education requirements
- They cannot demonstrate English proficiency
That does not necessarily mean Australia is no longer an option.
Alternative pathway - Student Visa
A Student Visa can often be an excellent alternative. Many vocational courses are available from 6, 12, 18 or 24 months. Popular one-year programs include:
- Business
- Project Management
- Marketing
- Hospitality
- Commercial Cookery
- Community Services
- Early Childhood Education
- Information Technology
With a Student Visa you can:
- Study full-time
- Work while studying
- Potentially bring family members
- Extend your stay through further study
- Explore future migration pathways depending on your circumstances
For many applicants who miss out on a Work and Holiday Visa, a one-year Diploma course can provide a straightforward pathway to experience life in Australia while gaining a recognised qualification.
